How TCM Can Help Your Eczema

Manage Eczema Symptoms

Herbal medication alleviates underlying imbalances in the body to relieve itch, inflammation, skin dryness, weeping and bleeding. When combined with acupuncture, irritation is reduced, fresh eczema patches dry faster and skin recovery is enhanced.

Regulate Immunity and
Strengthen Spleen

In TCM, weak Spleen function is closely tied to weak immunity which could lead to a compromised skin barrier. This causes the skin to be more susceptible to invasion from external pathogens like dampness, resulting in eczema. Chinese herbs can be used to promote Spleen function and strengthen your skin barrier and support your immunity. Acupuncture can also help regulate immunity and improve overall health.

Improve Blood circulation
for recovery

Good blood and Qi circulation are vital to wound recovery for Eczema and TSW patients as it ensures good nutrient supply throughout the body. TCM herbs improve overall blood circulation whereas acupuncture can help to direct blood circulation towards eczema wounds to enhance skin healing. Combining both can greatly increase the speed of eczema wound healing and reduce the inflammation under the skin.

Kevin Khoo

I never had eczema as a kid or teenager, but as an adult, i started getting red patches on my face and neck every time I ate certain food or when i am hot like after a badminton game or even jogging. I was constantly on steroid creams but it was frustrating that everytime i get an attack, it would take 3-5 days of the rashes to go away. And i also started to use stronger steroids as the milder ones didn’t work anymore. This impacted my lifestyle alot and i was even afraid to exercise too much, worried it would trigger an attack. When i was introduced to Physician Leong, the first thing that made a difference was that she spoke excellent English and i could explain my medical history to her. I don’t speak mandarin very well and though i know roughly TCM works, my previous experience with a TCM practitioner was challenging cause we couldn’t communicate very well with each other. After taking the medication for 1 month, i started to see results. My eczema outbursts were fewer and milder. I continued taking the medication regularly for another few months and now my eczema is almost non-existent. I still keep a little bit of the medication just in case. Physician Leong has been really helpful beyond my eczema and also treated other ailments. She is very friendly and extremely easy to talk to.

I’ve been dealing with eczema on my face for more than a year. Although I sought help from a dermatologist previously, I noticed that the prescribed steroid creams caused undesirable side effects for my facial eczema. I saw Senior Physician Julie Low, who prescribed 3 weeks of herbal medicine to me and my condition improved significantly! There is almost no trace of eczema now. She was patient and nurturing, and I am thankful that I finally found a solution to keep my condition under control

The redness and inflammation on my skin is much reduced after two months of ELT and negative ion sessions, coupled with the TCM herbs. Physician Lim and clinic staff are very patient in explaining how TCM / ELT can help my skin! Sharing some pics of my skin before and after ELT and TCM treatment (more pics on my ig skinmatters.sg dedicated to my skin healing journey :))

I read the article on eczema and tropical steroid withdrawal – how does TCM helps and I want to learn more about it. Physician Leong is very patience in explaining and helping me understand. This is not a common experience I have with TCM and I appreciate Physician Leong taking the time to try to find out and try to get to the root of the problem. The visit was easy from the beginning with booking appointment using WhatsApp and friendly reception who always give warm greetings. I have recommended my friends who is interested in TCM and can only communicate in English to visit oriental remedies. I think it will be very helpful for her.

I tried a few TCMs in Singapore, and Oriental Remedies is by far the best. Physician Ng takes the time to explain my conditions in layman’s terms and in English (a plus!). She makes TCM concepts easy to understand. After seeing her for a month, my condition has significantly improved. The staff in the clinic are friendly and helpful. Overall, Oriental Remedies lives up to their promise to be a leading patient-centric healthcare provider. I had a great experience with them, thank you!

This was the time I tried TCM for a problem that was bugging for over a year. Physician Lim was quick to diagnose the issue and explained the problem and each step of the treatment patiently to me. He also took extra care as it was my first time getting acupuncture. I was back to normal in just a couple of sessions. Communication and kindness are the biggest strengths of this place.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is TCM safe and effective for eczema?

Yes, studies have proven that TCM herbs and acupuncture are safe and effective for eczema. Studies have shown that acupuncture helps in reducing itch intensity and improving overall symptoms, according to the Eczema Area and Severity Index. TCM herbs have also been proven to modulate immune responses and reduce inflammation, and a combination of ingesting medicine, external soak, and herbal cream helps improve overall conditions for patients with TSW syndrome. TCM herbs are also effective for children, according to a study that saw improvements in atopic dermatitis for children aged 4-7.

Are there side effects of TCM treatments for eczema?

There are generally no serious side effects. Some patients may experience flare-ups at the start of their treatments due to the weakened skin barrier. This shows that the TCM herbs are working, expelling damp-heat and toxins from the body. In such cases, patients should hydrate properly and avoid scratching, or contact us if flare-ups are more severe than usual or last longer than a week.

Can TCM manage the pain, itch, and bleeding from eczema?

TCM herbs can help to strengthen the skin barrier, preventing the invasion of the wind pathogen. It also strengthens the digestive system to remove dampness and excessive heat from the body. Acupuncture on the other hand helps to improve blood circulation to affected areas, improving skin recovery. These treatments target the underlying issues to reduce eczema symptoms and enhance your natural healing abilities.

Can tech-enhanced therapies manage eczema flare-ups and symptoms?

Yes, Electro-Lymphatic Therapy promotes good lymphatic circulation which helps to clear inflammation – a factor causing itch and redness. Improved lymphatic circulation also detoxifies the body for better skin recovery.

Negative Ion Therapy promotes cellular and body recovery through better circulation, immune balance and reduced inflammation. Furthermore it helps improve sleep quality which is beneficial to eczema patients.

How do tech-enhanced therapies complement TCM treatments for better results?

Each patient is assessed and recommended a personalised treatment plan based on their unique eczema condition. This means that different patients will require different treatments with varying priorities.

Generally, with patients that require more care or have severe blood and lymphatic system stagnation, a combination of TCM herbal medication, acupuncture, and tech-enhanced therapies like Electro-Lymphatic Therapy (ELT) and Negative Ion Therapy is able to provide faster relief for their symptoms.

While treatments will be customised to your body constitution, what you can expect in a typical week of treatment:

    1. Consultation with a physician who will assess the condition and prescribe Chinese herbs (20 min)
    2. Acupuncture treatment (as required) (> 30 min)
    3. Electro-Lymphatic Therapy (ELT)  (1 hour)
    4. Negative Ion Therapy (15 – 20 min)

TCM and technology work synergistically for better results
TCM herbs and acupuncture treatment can help to improve blood circulation and enhance the body’s own recovery system. However, when there is excessive inflammation or poor cell metabolism, the effects of TCM treatment may be slower or relatively short-lived.

In patients with widespread flare-ups and stubborn inflammation in the body, TCM treatments like herbal medication and acupuncture may not be able to suppress the inflammation and promote body recovery at the same time. As such, we encourage patients to do ELT concurrently to help clear inflammation from the body while we alleviate underlying imbalances causing eczema and enhance body recovery with traditional TCM therapies.

Similarly, in patients with poor cell metabolism, the benefits of Traditional therapies may take longer to take effect. Combined with Negative Ion Therapy which helps to boost cell metabolism, patients are more likely to experience faster and longer-lasting wound recovery.

In general, we encourage eczema patients who have not had great or long-lasting improvements with traditional therapies alone to try our tech-enhanced therapies.

How long will it take for me to see improvement?

It depends on your history of eczema, lifestyle and eating habits, environment, frequency of treatment, as well as body sensitivity to TCM herbs. Generally, patients may see improvements in their condition in 3-6 months, although a full stabilization with sustained results requires at least 9 months to a year of time.
