How Does TCM Help To Relieve Pain?

Improve Qi and Blood Circulation in the Body

Better Qi and Blood circulation allow nutrients to be brought to the affected areas, promoting recovery and reducing pain.

Enhance Natural Healing

Herbs effectively relieve full body pain by blocking pain signal transmissions, while acupuncture targets affected areas directly. When used together, the body’s natural healing abilities are enhanced, providing faster pain relief.

Relieves Tense Muscles

Cupping is used to treat pain, reduce inflammation, relieve muscle tensions, ease scar tissues deep within the muscle and connective tissues, and reduce swelling and muscle fascia knots.

Reduce Inflammation

Herbs like turmeric, ru xiang, and mo yao, effectively reduce inflammation. When used with acupuncture, inflammation is controlled and the body’s natural healing abilities are enhanced.

Expel Dampness From Body

Excess dampness in your body can cause widespread pain in joints and body. Herbs help to expel the dampness from within, while cupping is done to “extract” the dampness externally.

Hear From Our Patients

Joan T

Being afraid of pain and needles, I was not keen on seeking acupuncture treatment for my chronic shoulder pain. Seeing western doctors did not help either, as I mostly just got painkillers which did not solve the problem. That was when I found out about Oriental Remedies online and their ELT services, so I decided to book an appointment and see if this treatment would be effective.

My first ELT session lived up to my expectations. It was painless and so relaxing. The therapist was very professional and conducted the treatment smoothly. Most importantly, I can feel that my chronic aching shoulder is not as tense anymore and my whole body is lighter just after one session! I am so glad I found an alternative treatment that is painless yet effective for my shoulder. Big thanks to Oriental Remedies for bringing in modern effective technologies and I highly recommend them!

I had suffered from a wrist and thumb injury since 6 months ago and had recently reinjured the area. Although I had been through several rounds of physiotherapy, flexibility was still an issue , simple movements hurt, and reinjury was frequent. I found ORG on one of the list of top TCM clinics in Singapore and decided to give it a go. The place was clean, staff were professional. Was treated by Physician Ong and I was given acupuncture and external medication. The pain went off within a week (even that from the re-injury). And mobility improved a lot. Because it worked so well, I decided to seek treatment for chronic back issues (so far the cupping treatment has relieved the pain significantly).

Highly recommend this place – give it a go. The rates are reasonable and treatments really helped with pain relief.

I had muscle tension / pull on both my right arm and right knee. Instead of going for a massage just for these 2 spots or cupping (having marks lasting for few days) I decided to try acupuncture. Came across Oriental Remedies via Google and since it’s around my area so why not give it a try. The physicians are young yet traditional. I was so glad that I can converse in English with every staff there. Consultation was very detailed and I was well informed of how the pain was build up and what can be done to not encounter it again. For my right arm, all that was needed was 2 needle poked on my left shin while doing light stretches within the 20mins. I was very surprised yet pleased that within 1 session my right arm pain that was with me for almost 2 weeks is gone. For my right knee, the pain was lessen after the first session. After consuming the traditional medicine w water for 3 days, my knee was healed within few days. To end the first session on a sweet note, there was 50% off for the first time consultation using dbs/posb card. I am extremely happy. 2nd session to ensure everything was healed and I’m good as new. Oriental remedies is definitely worth the visit if you have aching problems (like me) and wants almost instant result / help.

Came for a chronic lower back pain that I have been experiencing for a couple of years (from sports injury) that has been bothering me even more recently. I consulted with physician Ang and she recommended me seek treatment weekly for a month. Over the course of the month, I could feel progress and the relief from the pain really did my sleep a world of good!

I was experiencing shoulder and back pain. Decided to visit Oriental Remedies at Jurong east for treatment. The physician was experienced and told me that usually for my case, I will only require 2 sessions of treatments to get it fixed. She was spot on. Appreciate that she told me that it will be optional whether I would continue my treatment since I’ve recovered. (That really touches me that they care about my condition more rather than just sales!) They even dropped me a text to check whether I’ve recovered. All the receptionist are full of energy and positive vibes! Well done

I’ve had a painful left hand and elbow (because of my neck) for about 14 months. Everyday things like typing and showering were painful — my left arm wasn’t very usable. For the past year, I’d manage the pain with painkillers and the condition with physiotherapy.

Last month, I started treatment at Oriental Remedies (East Coast). Only after a few weekly acupuncture sessions with Physician Ng, my condition has improved enough that I no longer need to rely on painkillers to function and have regained use of my left arm. Thank you!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture uses thin sterilised needles and is not painful. Physicians are required to be skilful in their acupuncture skills. Patients typically feel nothing during the insertion of needles and only feel tenderness when physicians adjust the needles.

How many sessions do I need to see results?

This depends on the patient’s condition. Acute conditions may see improvements after a session but chronic conditions may take longer.

Is TCM effective in relieving pain?

Yes. Studies have shown that TCM is effective in relieving pain. [1] It is increasingly used as an alternative form of pain relief. Other studies have shown that acupuncture reduces the need for painkillers. [2] Acupuncture also provides an alternative treatment for patients who are unable to take medication for pain or patients who prefer a natural form of treatment.

How do tech-enhanced therapies complement TCM treatments for better results

Each patient is assessed and recommended a personalised treatment plan based on their unique pain conditions. This means that different patients will require different treatments with varying priorities.

Generally, with patients that require more care or have severe blood and lymphatic system stagnation, a combination of TCM herbal medication, acupuncture, and tech-enhanced therapies like Electro-Lymphatic Therapy (ELT) and Negative Ion Therapy is able to provide rapid pain relief.

While treatments will be customised to your body constitution, what you can expect in a typical week of treatment:

    1. Consultation with a physician who will assess the condition and prescribe Chinese herbs (20 min)
    2. Acupuncture, cupping, or gua sha treatment (as required) (> 30 min)
    3. Electro-Lymphatic Therapy (ELT) (1 hour)
    4. Negative Ion Therapy (15 – 20 min)

TCM and technology work synergistically for better results
TCM herbs and acupuncture treatment can help to improve blood circulation and enhance the body’s own recovery system. However, when there is excessive inflammation or poor cell metabolism, the effects of TCM treatment may be slower or relatively short-lived.

In patients with excessive pain and stubborn inflammation in the body, TCM treatments like acupuncture by itself may not be able to suppress the inflammation and promote body recovery at the same time. As such, we encourage patients to do ELT concurrently to help clear inflammation from the body while we enhance body recovery with traditional TCM therapies.

Similarly, in patients with poor cell metabolism, the pain-relieving benefits of traditional therapies may take longer to take effect. When combined with Negative Ion Therapy which helps to boost cell metabolism, patients are more likely to experience faster and longer-lasting pain relief.

In general, we encourage patients who have not had great or long-lasting improvements with traditional therapies alone to try our tech-enhanced therapies.
