TCM MENOPAUSE TREATMENT IN SINGAPORE
NAVIGATE MENOPAUSE WITH GREATER BALANCE
From perimenopause to menopause, our personalised TCM care supports changes in sleep, mood, energy and overall well-being through this natural transition.
WHAT IS MENOPAUSE & PERIMENOPAUSE?
Menopause is a natural stage in a woman’s life when menstrual cycles gradually come to an end. It is usually recognised after 12 consecutive months without a period.
Perimenopause refers to the transition leading up to menopause, where hormonal changes may cause irregular periods, hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood changes, vaginal dryness or weight changes.
While menopause is a natural transition, symptoms can vary from woman to woman. For some, the changes may be mild. For others, they may affect daily comfort, energy, sleep, mood and overall well-being.
In TCM, menopause is often linked to a gradual decline in Kidney essence, also known as Jing, and a depletion of Yin energy. This may lead to deficiency and excess Heat patterns, where symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, dryness, poor sleep and emotional sensitivity become more noticeable. TCM care focuses on nourishing the Kidneys, supporting Qi, and helping the body move through this transition with greater balance.

SIGNS OF MENOPAUSE
The signs of menopause can vary from woman to woman. Some may experience mild changes, while others may find that their symptoms affect daily comfort, sleep, mood and overall well-being. These signs may also begin during perimenopause, before periods stop completely.
Sudden waves of heat, flushing or warmth that may occur during the day or night.
Excessive sweating during sleep, which may disrupt rest and leave you feeling tired the next day.
Changes in cycle timing, flow or frequency as the body transitions towards menopause.
Difficulty falling asleep, waking during the night or feeling unrested despite sleeping.
Irritability, anxiety, low mood or feeling more emotionally sensitive than usual.
Changes in intimate wellness, including dryness, discomfort or lower sexual desire.
Weight gain, bloating or changes in body composition that may become more noticeable over time.
Lower energy, reduced focus, forgetfulness or feeling mentally “cloudy”.
CAUSES OF MENOPAUSE & SYMPTOMS
Menopause symptoms are largely linked to declining ovarian function and changing levels of reproductive hormones, particularly oestrogen and progesterone. As these hormones fluctuate, periods may become irregular before stopping, and symptoms can affect areas beyond the reproductive system, including sleep, mood, skin, vaginal health, bone health, energy and overall well-being.
While ageing is the main driver of menopause, factors such as chronic stress, poor sleep, smoking, excessive alcohol intake and poor dietary habits may worsen hormonal imbalance and intensify symptoms during this transition.
In TCM, the way menopause shows up can differ depending on each woman’s body constitution and underlying imbalance patterns. This is why treatment focuses on understanding the root of your symptoms, rather than treating each symptom in isolation.
Natural Hormonal Changes
In Western medicine, menopause is primarily caused by a gradual decline in ovarian function as women age. Women are born with a finite number of eggs in the ovaries. Over time, the ovaries become less responsive and produce lower levels of reproductive hormones, particularly oestrogen and progesterone.
As these hormone levels fluctuate and eventually decline, menstrual cycles become irregular before stopping altogether.
Decline in Oestrogen
Oestrogen plays an important role beyond menstruation. It also supports bone health, cardiovascular health, skin elasticity and vaginal tissue health.
As oestrogen levels decline, some women may experience symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, skin dryness, body aches, sleep changes, weight changes or lower energy.
Lifestyle Factors Worsen Hormonal Imbalance
While ageing is the main driver of menopause, lifestyle and health factors may influence how strongly symptoms show up. Chronic stress, poor sleep, smoking, excessive alcohol intake and poor dietary habits may worsen hormonal imbalance during the menopausal transition [1].
Some women may also experience menopause earlier due to genetics, autoimmune conditions, certain medical treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation, or surgical removal of the ovaries. When menopause occurs before the age of 40, it is known as premature menopause or premature ovarian insufficiency.
Decline of Kidney Essence
In TCM, menopause is closely associated with the gradual decline of Kidney Essence, also known as Jing. The Kidneys are believed to govern growth, ageing, reproduction and fertility.
As Kidney Essence naturally declines with age, the body’s ability to nourish and regulate reproductive function may weaken, leading to the cessation of menstruation and the onset of menopausal symptoms. [2]
Yin and Yang Imbalance
TCM views health as a balance between Yin and Yang. During menopause, this balance may shift.
Many menopausal symptoms are associated with Yin deficiency. Yin is responsible for cooling, nourishing and moistening the body. When Yin becomes insufficient, “heaty” symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and dry skin may become more noticeable.
Some women may also experience Yang deficiency, which may show up as fatigue, coldness, low energy or a weaker sense of vitality. [3]
Disruption in Liver and Heart systems
TCM also recognises that menopause can affect emotional well-being. Stress, emotional strain and ageing may disrupt the Liver and Heart systems.
Liver Qi stagnation may contribute to mood swings, irritability and tension, while disturbance of the Heart Shen may lead to anxiety, palpitations and poor sleep. [4]
This is why TCM treatment for menopause often focuses not only on hot flushes, but also on sleep quality, emotional balance, digestion, energy levels and overall well-being.
*Patients may present with a combination of different syndromes, not just one.

CELL PRO THERAPY (CPT)
A non-invasive therapy that supplies the body with reducing electrons, which have antioxidant properties that support overall wellness. It may be recommended to support cellular metabolism, circulation, mood balance and fatigue during menopause.

Physician Leong Weizhen is my go to at Oreintal Remedies. I have been seeing her for almost 2 years, starting with sports related issues and now for my perimenopause symptoms and overall well-being. Her expertise, attentiveness and patience dealing and looking into my well - being is something that I really am appreciative. Overall, I love Oriental Remedies professionalism, effectiveness, attentiveness, and I am definitely overly satisfied with the service received.

I came to Oriental Remedies Clinic with lower back pain, some spotting, and early signs of perimenopause. I had also recently moved to Singapore from overseas, which brought some added stress and anxiety. Physician Chelsea was very understanding and thorough from the first consultation. She explained that treatment would take time (around six months), but after just 2–3 sessions of acupuncture and herbal medicine, I already noticed improvements. My lower back pain eased, and I felt more balanced overall. Previously, I had visited a TCM shop in a shopping centre where the treatment room door was not closed while shoppers were passing by, which made me feel uncomfortable. At Oriental Remedies Clinic, the environment is completely different — private, calm, and very professional. The level of care and attention makes each visit comfortable and reassuring. I highly recommend Oriental Remedies Clinic and Physician Chelsea to anyone looking for professional, compassionate, and effective TCM care. Read More

I have been seeing Physician Eileen Lim for more than a month for weekly/fortnightly sessions. I had shoulder and neck pain which led to headache and it affected my sleep. Physician Eileen was very detailed in the diagnosis and I have been having regular acupuncture sessions and medicine. After the first session, my shoulder and neck pain were gone and my headache too! She also prescribed medicine to balance my Yin and Yang due to peri menopausal conditions. With regular acupuncture sessions, my health has improved tremendously thanks to Physician Eileen. The staff at the clinic are friendly and helpful, and the environment is clean and peaceful. Highly recommended!

We are extremely grateful to Physician Chelsea for spending extra time with us, especially as we were actually supposed to be at the Thomson branch, yet ended up at Orchard branch instead. She was so patient to listen and diagnose us, and we really see how accurate her diagnosis were for us,as I read up alot on health related matters. My menses started getting regular again with mood swings getting better, since taking the medication regularly, after months of on/off and very bad emotional swings as I might be going towards Perimenopause. Even my son’s constipation is better now despite being on Iron supplements which will cause stools to be hard, his appetite has improved too. Thank you Physician Chelsea and Oriental Remedies Group (Cuppage) Read More

FAQ
Can TCM help with hot flushes and night sweats?
Yes. In TCM, hot flushes and night sweats are often linked to internal imbalance, especially Yin deficiency and excess heat patterns. Treatment may include acupuncture, herbal medication and suitable supportive therapies to help regulate the body’s internal balance and ease heat-related symptoms.
Our physicians will assess your body constitution and symptoms before recommending a suitable treatment plan.
Can I seek TCM care during perimenopause?
Yes. You do not need to wait until your periods have completely stopped to seek support. Perimenopause can begin years before menopause, and symptoms such as irregular periods, hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood changes, vaginal dryness or weight changes may appear during this stage.
Seeking support earlier may help your body adjust more comfortably through the transition.
How long will it take to see improvements in my symptoms with TCM treatments?
This varies depending on your symptoms, body constitution, lifestyle and how long you have been experiencing discomfort. Some patients may notice improvements within a few weeks, while others may require a longer treatment period for more stable results.
Our physicians will review your progress over time and adjust your treatment plan where needed. Ongoing maintenance may also be recommended to support long-term balance.
Can TCM help with weight gain or changes in metabolism that often occur during menopause?
TCM may help support weight and metabolism changes by addressing underlying imbalances that affect digestion, fluid metabolism, energy levels and overall body function.
Depending on your body constitution, your treatment plan may include acupuncture, herbal medication and lifestyle guidance to support digestion, reduce bloating, improve energy and promote better balance through menopause.
How do you personalise treatments for menopause, and will I have a tailored plan?
Each treatment plan is tailored based on your symptoms, body constitution, lifestyle, sleep quality, stress levels and stage of menopause.
After an initial assessment using traditional pulse reading, tongue & physical observation, and deep lifestyle inquiry, our physician will recommend a personalised care plan, which may include acupuncture, herbal medication, tech-enhanced therapies, dietary advice and lifestyle recommendations.
How do tech-enhanced therapies complement TCM treatments for better results?
Tech-enhanced therapies may be recommended to complement Acupuncture and herbal medication, especially when concerns such as inflammation, poor circulation, water retention, fatigue or poor cell metabolism are present.
Electro-Lymphatic Therapy supports lymphatic flow and helps reduce congestion, water retention and inflammation-related discomfort. This may support the body’s natural recovery process and improve how well the body responds to TCM care.
Cell Pro Therapy supports cellular metabolism and blood circulation, which may help with fatigue, body aches, brain fog and overall recovery.
For patients who have not experienced significant or long-lasting improvements with traditional therapies alone, our physicians may recommend suitable tech-enhanced therapies as part of a more comprehensive treatment plan.
