WHAT IS INFERTILITY?

Infertility refers to the inability to conceive after 12 months or more of regular, unprotected intercourse.[1] It can affect both men and women, and may be caused by a combination of physical, hormonal or lifestyle factors.

For men, this may involve sperm health. For women, it may relate to ovulation, the uterus or fallopian tubes. Fertility challenges can be emotionally and physically challenging. But with the right care and support, there are ways to improve your chances and feel more in control of your journey.

TCM IMBALANCES AFFECTING FERTILITY

In TCM, fertility hinges on the harmonious balance and smooth flow of the body’s fundamental energies and functions – primarily Qi (vital energy), Blood, and the intricate workings of the organ systems (such as the Kidney, Liver, and Spleen). When this delicate equilibrium is disrupted, it can impact reproductive health and function in both men and women.

Beyond these internal factors, TCM also recognises that stress, emotional well-being, lifestyle choices, and diet play significant roles. Our approach focuses on gently restoring this inherent balance within your body, nurturing its natural ability to conceive and sustain a healthy pregnancy.

Also known as Gong Han (宫寒), this condition is linked to Yang deficiency and reduced blood flow to the womb, making it less receptive to implantation. It can be influenced by lifestyle factors such as frequent consumption of cold foods or prolonged exposure to cold. Cold Womb Syndrome may affect women of all ages and is a common concern for those trying to conceive.

Kidney Deficiency refers to an imbalance or depletion of vital energies — Jing, Yin, and Yang — that are rooted in the Kidneys. These energies are crucial for reproductive function in both men and women. When deficient, this can lead to challenges such as poor egg or sperm quality, hormonal imbalances or poor fertility.

Types of Kidney Deficiency:

  • Kidney Jing Deficiency impacts the fundamental reproductive essence, leading to issues like low sperm count or poor egg quality
  • Kidney Yin Deficiency causes internal Heat and Dryness, potentially affecting the endometrial lining and egg quality
  • Kidney Yang Deficiency results in Coldness, impacting ovulation and sperm motility.

Blood Stagnation refers to impaired circulation that disrupts the smooth flow of Blood through the body’s meridians and vessels. This can be triggered by stress, physical trauma, exposure to cold, or even a deficiency in Qi (vital energy) that normally moves the blood.

In fertility, Blood Stagnation can prevent the uterus and ovaries from receiving adequate nourishment, leading to menstrual irregularities such as painful periods with dark, clotted blood, irregular cycles, or amenorrhea (absence of periods). Furthermore, it can contribute to conditions like endometriosis, uterine fibroids, or blocked fallopian tubes, all of which create an unfavourable environment for conception and successful embryo implantation, thus significantly impacting fertility.

The Kidneys are considered the source of Jing (Essence), the vital substance that governs growth, development, and, crucially, reproductive strength. Kidney Deficiency, therefore, directly impacts a man’s reproductive vitality and overall energy levels. When Kidney Jing is insufficient, it can reduce the capacity for healthy sperm production. This often manifests as lower sperm count, poor sperm motility (movement), and abnormal sperm morphology (shape).

Furthermore, imbalances in other Kidney energies, specifically Kidney Yin or Yang Deficiency, can contribute to low libido, fatigue, or a decline in overall sexual energy. Collectively, these issues lead to poorer reproductive health.

Deficiencies in Blood & Qi indicate a lack of vital nourishment and energy needed for healthy function. In men, these deficiencies may lead to low vitality, reduced sexual performance, and poor sperm quality. Qi Deficiency can affect erectile function and energy levels, while Blood Deficiency may result in insufficient nourishment to support sperm production. Together, these patterns can significantly impact male fertility and overall reproductive health.

This refers to the accumulation of excess moisture (Dampness) and internal heat in the body. This imbalance often manifests with symptoms that are particularly problematic in the lower body.

The presence of Damp-Heat creates an inflammatory and sluggish environment that can interfere with sperm health and motility. It may lead to symptoms such as scrotal discomfort or excessive sweating, turbid urine, or a general feeling of heaviness in the lower body. Damp-Heat is a common pattern seen in male fertility cases and is linked to reduced sperm quality and inflammation.

*Patients may present with a combination of different syndromes, not just one.

GET CLARITY

Here’s everything you need to know about getting help for fertility concerns.

TCM FERTILITY TREATMENTS

Whether you’re trying naturally or going through IVF or IUI, TCM helps prepare your body by improving circulation, reducing stress and supporting hormonal balance. Combined with tech-enhanced therapies, our treatments offer a holistic way to strengthen fertility and support your journey to conception.

NATURAL CONCEPTION

Our treatments are designed to gently regulate hormonal balance in both partners to support consistent and healthy ovulation, optimal follicle development, and a receptive uterine lining for women, and robust sperm health for men – all crucial elements for successful conception and implantation.

Optimal blood flow is vital for nourishing the reproductive organs. Insufficient circulation can compromise the health and function of the ovaries and uterus. Improving circulation supports the development of healthy, viable follicles and also creates a well-nourished, receptive uterine environment for a healthy pregnancy.

Our integrated approach strengthens the immune system and actively helps reduce stress, anxiety, and emotional tension. By fostering a calm and balanced internal state, we create a more supportive and conducive environment for natural conception to occur.

Often, sub-optimal reproductive health stems from deeper internal imbalances or deficiencies within the body.

Our personalised approach identifies and corrects these underlying disharmonies, which may manifest as fatigue, poor digestion, or other issues that indirectly affect fertility. By strengthening your body’s overall vitality and rectifying these imbalances, we enhance your natural capacity for conception and support a healthy pregnancy.

We enhance gonadal function and reduce oxidative stress to support sperm production, morphology and motility and protect sperm DNA. By addressing these critical aspects, we improve the chances of successful fertilisation.

Physical and psychological factors affecting sexual performance can interfere with a couple’s ability to conceive naturally.

We address issues such as erectile dysfunction, low libido, or other concerns that may create barriers to regular, successful intercourse. By supporting healthy sexual function, we help couples optimise their opportunities for natural conception comfortably and confidently.

IVF/IUI SUPPORT

The journey through IVF/IUI can be emotionally challenging, and chronic stress can significantly impact hormone balance and reproductive function in both partners.

Our tech-enhanced TCM fertility treatments are designed to regulate the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and promote emotional well-being. By fostering a calmer internal environment, we nurture the hormonal balance that’s so vital for a successful conception.

Daily life exposes us to oxidative stress, which can impact egg quality in women and sperm health in men.

Our natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory approaches combat this cellular damage. This protection supports healthy follicular development and maturation in women, and sperm vitality and motility in men – both crucial for successful fertilisation.

Good circulation is fundamental to reproductive success.

In women, improved blood flow ensures optimal nutrient delivery to the ovaries and uterus, supporting healthy ovulation, uterine lining development, and implantation.[2]

In men, enhanced circulation contributes to healthy testosterone levels and overall reproductive organ function, vital for sperm production and quality.

Conditions like endometriosis, PCOS, irregular menstrual cycles, or a thin uterine lining can impact IVF and IUI outcomes.

Our TCM and Tech-enhanced therapies are designed to help your body recover. We focus on regulating Qi and Blood circulation, balancing hormones, and easing the symptoms linked to these conditions. By strengthening the womb and creating a more nurturing internal environment, we enhance the chances of successful implantation and pregnancy.

For men, we support the function of organs like the Spleen, Liver, and Kidney, which are closely linked to sperm production and quality.

For women, addressing imbalances such as Cold Womb Syndrome helps create a more receptive environment for pregnancy.

By improving the overall body constitution for both partners, we empower you with greater readiness and resilience throughout your fertility journey.

FAQ

The timeline for seeing results from fertility treatment is highly individual and can vary significantly. It depends on several factors, including your unique health profile, the specific fertility challenges you’re facing, and how consistently you adhere to your personalised treatment plan.

While some patients may begin to observe positive changes or improvements in their fertility markers within a few months, others may require a longer duration of consistent therapy to achieve their desired outcomes. We understand that fertility journeys require patience, and our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Yes, acupuncture can play a supportive role in fertility for both women and men. It helps modulate the nervous system to reduce stress and anxiety, which are known to negatively affect reproductive health.[3]

Acupuncture is also thought to regulate reproductive hormones and improve blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, potentially enhancing ovarian function and endometrial receptivity and possibly improving sperm quality in men.[4]

Some studies suggest that when used alongside assisted reproductive technologies like IVF, acupuncture may be associated with higher pregnancy rates.[5]

While not always essential for every patient, herbal medicine is frequently recommended as a powerful complement to acupuncture and other therapies. It works synergistically to help regulate menstrual cycles, balance hormones, and nourish the reproductive system, enhancing overall treatment effectiveness. The decision to include herbal medicine will always be tailored to your unique health condition and fertility journey, as determined by your physician.

Both partners are always welcome to undergo TCM fertility treatments together, regardless of whether the diagnosis is male or female infertility. After all, this is a journey that couples go through together, and things like the diet and lifestyle of one partner can affect fertility chances overall, even if it is the other partner who suffers from infertility.

TCM fertility care also serves to boost holistic wellness in both partners to help the chances of pregnancy, regardless of underlying infertility. Benefits like improved blood circulation and immunity are beneficial overall, as is reducing oxidative stress damage in the body.

When infertility is unexplained, it can cause great grief for couples who don’t know how to solve an unknown problem. To start, couples can consider treatments like herbal medication and acupuncture, which have broad wellness effects that also boost fertility.

However, there is usually no perfect one-size-fits-all fertility treatment plan in TCM because it is a practice that is very personal and tailored to the individual’s unique body constitutions and conditions. Hence, we recommend working closely with our Oriental Remedies physicians to figure out the most suitable plan for you and your partner.

From our experience, there is often significant potential for improvement. TCM therapies focus on identifying and addressing the underlying imbalances that may have contributed to a prolonged period of trying to conceive. We have had many patients experience positive changes and improved fertility outcomes, even after years of struggling.

However, individual results can vary. The extent of improvement will depend on several factors, including the specific nature and severity of your condition, your overall health, and how your body responds to your personalised treatment plan.

Yes. Stress can significantly impact fertility by disrupting hormone levels, ovulation and overall reproductive function. TCM therapies such as acupuncture and herbal medicine can help reduce stress and promote relaxation, supporting your fertility journey.

It’s important to consult your healthcare provider before making changes to your current treatment plan. TCM therapies can often complement assisted reproductive techniques like IVF or IUI, as well as conventional medications. Your physician will work with you to design an integrated approach that aligns safely and effectively with your fertility goals.

Yes. Acupuncture can support male fertility by improving sperm count, motility and overall reproductive health. It works by enhancing blood flow to the testes and helping to regulate hormone levels.
